Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah, April 23, 2006
Words by John Hughes - (c) Public Domain
Music by Leah Van Maaren

Another in the series of old hymn lyrics, new tunes. I'm amazed how the words of this hymn have come alive for me now that I've spent time making it my own and reflecting, the words have become written on my heart. I changed the words from the original, not removing the 'thou' and 'art' but the "I" and "me" to make it a corporate expression.

Guide us, O thou great Jehovah
Pilgrim through this barren land
We are weak but thou art mighty
Hold us with thy powerful hand
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed us till we want no more
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed us till we want no more

Open now the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream doth flow
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead us all the journey through
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer,
Be thou still our strength and shield
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer,
Be thou still our strength and shield

When we tread the verge of Jordan
Bid our anxious fears subside
Bear us through the swelling current
Land us safe on Canaan's side
Land us safe on Canaan's side
Lord, land us safe on Canaan's side

Songs of praises, songs of praises
We will ever give to thee...

Guide us, O thou great Jehovah
Pilgrim through this barren land
